Orange leads the way in Regional NSW Visitation and Spend

According to the latest domestic tourism figures released by Destination NSW, the Orange region is leading the way for Central NSW tourism with substantial increases to both visitation and spend.
Destination NSW recently held an Industry Development workshop in Orange, open to local tourism and hospitality providers, where the results of their domestic tourism visitor research and statistics for YE 2016 were presented.

A total of 1,079,000 visitors were recorded to Orange, Blayney and Cabonne during YE June 2016, compared to 884,000 visitors YE June 2015, representing a 22% increase. A 23% increase in visitor spend during that period has also been recorded, growing from $218m YE June 2015 to $269m YE June 2016.

“Feedback from the State tourism body, Destination NSW, is that the Orange region is leading the way in regional domestic tourism across NSW, and these figures from Destination NSW clearly support that statement,” says Rhonda Sear, Executive Officer, Brand Orange.

Momentum continues to build positively towards establishing a joint tourism venture between the Brand Orange Board and Orange City Council. A motion for forming a Transition Board under the Australian Corporations Act was passed on Tuesday 15 November 2016, with equal representation from the Brand Orange Board and Council having been approved by Councillors.
It has been agreed that the Brand Orange Board will nominate the Chairperson for the Transition Board, which will commence from 1 January 2017 with a sole focus on the strategy development for the proposed new tourism entity. It is envisaged the new entity will begin operating in H2 2017.

“We will ensure that our priority is given to the work of the Transition Board, while Brand Orange continues to deliver in the promotion of our region on a business-per-usual basis,” says Peter Robson, Chair of Brand Orange Board, “Although tourism in the region continues to go from strength-to-strength, we cannot afford to rest on our laurels.

“It is critical to ensure that we are one united industry-led voice, and that we continue to remain ahead of the pack.”
Brand Orange will continue operating in its current form until 30 June 2017, when it is envisaged the new tourism entity will be finalised and then launched.

Input into the new entity’s tourism strategy for the Orange region will be incorporated from the results of industry stakeholder feedback obtained through two Industry Tourism Workshops hosted by Orange City Council in August this year.

Wine Exports from Orange Region increase by 82%

NSW wine regions are leading the way in exports, with the Orange region leading the way according to a media release distributed by Stuart Ayres, NSW Government Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events.

"Global demand for wine from some of NSW’s most popular wine regions has soared in the past 12 months, including an 82 per cent rise in international sales from one region alone.
According to new figures released today by Wine Australia for the 12 months to March 2016, Orange, Mudgee, the Hunter Valley and the Canberra district all saw a jump in exports.
NSW Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events Stuart Ayres welcomed the results. “It’s pleasing to see that our large and smaller regions alike, including Orange and Mudgee are growing strongly,” Mr Ayres said.
“Exports from the Orange region exploded 82 per cent, breaking through the $2 million mark. The Mudgee region increased its international sales by 45 per cent and is valued at over $1 million for the first time,” he said.
“The Hunter Valley, one of the state’s biggest wine producing regions, increased its exports by 19 per cent to up to almost $5 million annually.”
“One of the most impressive results was from the Canberra district, much of which encompasses NSW including Bungendore, Murrumbateman and Lake George. In this region exports there are up by 101 per cent.”
“Across the state, winemakers are continuing to produce world-class wine and word is spreading. I’m encouraged to see NSW wineries embracing an export focus.”
China is by far the biggest export destination for NSW wines, which grew 10 per cent to almost $8 million. The UK is NSW’s second largest export market, which saw 25 per cent growth to over $3.5 million.
In the twelve months to March 2016, NSW wine exports grew overall by 13 per cent to $26,270,213.
Destination NSW Chief Executive Officer Sandra Chipchase said the NSW Government promotes its diverse wine regions across Australia and the globe, and the food, wine and travel experiences to go with them. “Wine tourism is a key attraction in NSW and our State is home to 14 distinct and unique wine regions, from the oldest in Australia in the Hunter Valley, to the newest in New England. NSW is a beacon for those who appreciate fantastic wine and local produce,” Ms Chipchase said.

Celebrating French connections in Orange for FOOD Week

While Stockman’s Ridge Wines branding evokes visions of the Australian outback, the wine itself is closer tied to the French vineyards.
Owner of Stockman’s Ridge Wines, Jonathan Hambrook, was lucky enough to enjoy annual holidays in the South of France where his parents shared a holiday home with other Francophiles.
“Every time I visited there would be something happening in the vineyards. I got to see the seasons change and with that, the different tasks undertaken to make some of France’s best wines,” Jonathan said.
Years later, it was these techniques that Jonathan brought with him to his vineyards in Bathurst and Orange.
Little did he know that in a neighbouring French village, renowned, hatted chef Michael Manners was enjoying a similar lifestyle. The two met in Orange and have been working on events and functions at the scenic Stockman’s Ridge Wines ever since.
Jonathan recently prepared a marquee space and it will be christened during FOOD Week with a lavish four-course lunch featuring local produce.
L’amour de la France will be a fun filled event with lawn games and music setting the scene under the stunning Mount Canobolas.

“Stockman’s Ridge Wines might be one of Orange’s youngest wineries with a passion for the Australian countryside,” Jonathan said, “but our product salutes one of the oldest wine growing regions of France.”

During the lunch Michael and Jonathan will talk about their love for the region and hope to transport everyone at the lunch to our little piece of France.

If you’re looking for an ‘ahhh’ moment, our cellar door is a must in any season.  In Summer it’s all about the leafy drive, the green hills and incredible skies above the majestic Mount Canobolas.

Driving down our well-maintained gravel road the stunning tunnel of lavish trees opens out to an established garden and cellar door.

Guests Winter days or on a crisp, sunny Winter day,

During Summer our guests are invited to taste a selection of our wines either inside the cool, tiled cellar door or in the shade of our garden on customised wine barrel chairs. On cooler days and evenings, wander further to the lawn seating overlooking valleys, vineyards and the scenic mountains and on evenings, we often light a fire in our unique firepit and enjoy a glass of red or white.  

Just a short drive out of Orange, our cellar door is a great starting point for a journey back into town on the Cargo Road wine trail which also includes De Salis Wines and Cargo Road winery.

Our cellar door is open five days a week from Thursday to Monday, 11am to 5pm including public holidays.
